My First Time Making Biscuits and Gravy from Scratch

Well, last week I finally did it. I made biscuits and gravy from scratch for the very first time. When we would go out to eat, I would often see this Southern classic on the brunch menu but was always a bit too skeptical to try it out. And, having a sensitive stomach, I’m always cautious about trying new things, even though I want to try everything!

I mean, would biscuits and gravy really fill me up? Could something so simple taste that good? And the answer is yes! Absolutely, yes to both of those questions.

So, what is in that gravy that makes this breakfast so good?

Here’s what the gravy in Biscuits and Gravy is made of…

  • Unsalted butter
  • Milk
  • Flour
  • ground pork sausage

If you’re like me, you might realize at the most inopportune time that you’re running low on milk. And, when I woke up early to make this breakfast one weekday for the girl’s and I, that’s exactly the situation I found myself in. So, I used the rest of the milk I had on hand, the last of some heavy cream, and finished it off with some vegetable broth.

Life tip: Vegetable broth is just one of those pantry staples you need to have on hand at all times. Seriously, it always comes in handy. And seeing as you may use a bit more butter than you would like with this recipe, I feel that substituting a bit of veggie broth will help to lighten this gravy up a bit.

Breakfast with a side of…

The answer to what to eat with biscuits and gravy depends heavily on the season you choose to make this breakfast. Right now, it’s summertime here in Tennessee. In other words, if you walk outside and stand still for a couple of minutes, you will begin to sweat.

With that in mind, I highly recommend making a fruit salad to pair with this heavy breakfast. Or, simply cut up a few slices of your favorite fruits on the side.  A delicious (sweet and savory) choice!

Now, if it’s wintertime and the temperatures are a bit cooler, go all in! Make your favorite style of eggs, hash browns, maybe even some bacon? Yum!

And yes, I would highly recommend making this breakfast for the holiday season if you’re hosting or invited to a holiday brunch at someone’s home.

So, which recipe did I follow when I made biscuits and gravy? This recipe from Southern Living will not lead you astray. There are just nine ingredients. But the best part is that in as little as 45 minutes you can have this mostly scratch made breakfast on the table.

If you decide to give it a try, let me know how this breakfast recipe worked out for you!
