What do you think when you hear the words self care? I think spa day, girls night and bubble baths! But, did you know that healthy cooking is also a form of self care? Yes, cooking! Although some of us may see cooking as a chore, there are steps you can take to transform this everyday activity to up-level your wellness lifestyle.

Have you ever heard the saying “you are what you eat“? Well, its not so far-fetched. Food enters your bloodstream, and your blood creates your cells, tissue and organs. So, with that in mind, proper food and nutrition allows your body to function at its best!

Jumping into a healthy lifestyle does not have to be so overwhelming. There are simple changes you can make to get started!

Start Cooking Healthy.

Learning to cook is one of the best things you can do for your health and that of your family’s as well. There are easy rules to live by after you’ve made the choice to start cooking healthy.

  • Choose Fresh, Local & Organic
Fresh ingredients are some of the most healthful to incorporate into your daily diet. Local foods are great as well because they have less contaminants due to geographical proximity. In other words, they have less distance to travel so, it is less likely they have contaminants on them to prolong their shelf life.

Try to find a local farmers market where you can purchase your produce/meats, get to know the farmer and support his/her business. Its a win-win for everyone!

Organic foods keep chemicals and pesticides off of your plate. In summary, adding fresh, local and organic ingredients can truly transform each and every meal!

  • Keep it Simple
Try to limit each dish to 2-3 ingredients, never more than 4 or 5. Save the complicated recipes for a special occasion or Sunday dinner with the family.

  • Cook Once, Eat Twice
Maximize your time by cooking more than you need at each meal. That way you can set aside the leftovers for another meal. In our house we often take our dinner leftovers for lunch the next day. Or, if there is a huge amount left over, we will save it for another dinner during the week.

Cooking with Essential Oils.

There are tons of benefits to cooking with essential oils! You can add flavor to your favorite dish while using safe, natural ingredients that promote wellness within the body. Depending on the oil, you can use essential oils to promote healthy digestion, cleanse the body, support healthy function of the body’s systems, provide the body with antioxidants, and other internal benefits.*

While ingesting essential oils is completely safe, there are some oils that are not safe to use internally. These oils are – Arborvitae, Cedarwood, Cypress, Douglas Fir, Eucalyptus, Spikenard and Wintergreen.

Before using essential oils internally, make sure to investigate your essential oil company of choice. I recommend doTERRA because of their high quality, thoroughly tested oils.

During several rounds of rigorous testing, doTERRA essential oils are closely examined to ensure that they don’t contain any contaminants or harmful substances. This is why doTERRA essential oils are classified as Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG). Setting the industry standard when it comes to quality, doTERRA provides thoroughly tested oils that can provide you with the best results.
