In my home, we use essential oils for just about everything – cleaning, sleep, personal hygiene, emotional + immune support – the list can truly go on and on. The best way to make sure you are receiving the benefits of the essential oils you may have at home is to create rituals throughout your day that remind you to use them.
For instance, essential oils are a big part of our girls’ nightly routine. When Justin and I tuck them in at night, I apply a mixture of oils (depending on what we have on hand), to help promote a restful night’s sleep. My husband and I also reach for their diffuser (which doubles as a nightlight), and we add a blend that will create a calming space for them to fall asleep in. I’ll share more about the oils we use a little bit later.
THE BENEFITS OF ESSENTIAL OILS
I know I have already hinted at this but, essential oils can be used to improve nearly every activity of your day. Here are a few benefits to integrating essential oils into your daily routine:
Promote feelings of clear breathing
Protect your body against environmental threats
Soothe occasional stomach discomfort
Create a restful bedtime environment
Natural cleansing, purifying and soothing properties for skin, teeth and hair
And, truly this list is only scratching the surface in ways you can improve your health and wellness with essential oils. When I started my oily journey, I was looking for an all-natural alternative for stress relief, a way to boost my immunity, and I wanted to get rid of toxic chemicals in our self-care and household products. What is the reason you might want to get started withessential oils?
WHAT ESSENTIAL OILS ARE GOOD FOR SLEEP?
What’s important to keep in mind is that many essential oils are versatile, and can be used for a lot of different health and wellness concerns. So, let’s get into the top oils you can use to help the kiddos (and you) get a good night’s rest:
#1 CALMER
Calmer is doTERRA’s restful blend, including Lavender, Cananga, Buddha Wood, and Roman Chamomile in a base of fractionated coconut oil. Each of these oils is known to help create a restful atmosphere and promote a positive mood.
4 Ways to Use Calmer Restful Blend
Roll in palms and inhale directly from cupped hands
Roll on to the back of the neck and chest to promote a restful night’s sleep
Apply to wrists at the end of the day to diminish worry and to quiet restlessness
Apply to bottoms of feet at bedtime to help unwind before going to sleep
Calmer is one of the oils included in our girls’ bedtime routine. I will either apply it to their wrists, back of neck or chest to help them mellow out.
#2 COPAIBA
doTERRA’s Copaiba is extracted from copaiba trees in the Amazon rainforest. It is truly a versatile oil, and one that Nora requests every night. Sadie didn’t like it at first but, she has begun to ask for it more and more. The girls take Copaiba internally – 6 drops for Nora, and 2 drops for Sadie. But, let’s get into other ways you can incorporate this oil into your routine –
4 Ways to Use Copaiba
Take internally to soothe and calm the nervous system
Apply topically to keep skin clear + help reduce blemishes
Diffuse with Serenity to promote a calm + peaceful environment
Combine with Deep Blue Rub to soothe sore, tired muscles
#3 BALANCE
Balance has a warm, woody aroma. This blend consists of spruce, ho wood, frankincense, blue tansy and blue chamomile. I apply this oil to the bottoms of the girls’ feet each night. Did you know that when applying oils to kids, the bottoms of the feet are a good place to start? That’s because the feet can easily absorb oils, but are less prone to sensitivity.
4 Ways to Use Balance
Add a few drops to your Epsom salt bath
Apply to bottoms of feet to lessen feelings of stress throughout the day or before bed
Apply to neck and wrists to ease anxious feelings
Add to diffuser with Serenity to promote a calm environment
#4 VETIVER
Vetiver is a personal favorite of mine. There’s something about that sweet + smoky woody aroma that I cannot resist. Did you know that vetiver is also a great insect repellent? Me neither but, that’s a definite added bonus! This oil gets applied to the girls pulse points before bed, and if I am running low, then I wil just apply Cedarwood instead.
4 Ways to Use Vetiver
Diffuse with Lavender, Serenity or Balance
Add to moisturizer and apply to scars and stretch marks
Add a drop to hot tea to help support the immune function
Use Vetiver in a relaxing massage
