Ozone Falls A Hidden Gem in Cumberland County, Tennessee

Ozone Falls Natural Area is a must visit for nature enthusiasts year round. But, it’s even more magical during the warmer months, when you are able to swim right beside a waterfall!

This week we took an impromptu late afternoon trip to Ozone Falls in Cumberland County, Tennessee. This is a hike that I have been meaning to cross off of my list for quite some time. However, I can see us returning to this swimming hole frequently during the summer months.

First and foremost, you should know that Ozone Falls is not an easy hike. Well, that is if you are looking to see the waterfall from the bottom where the swimming hole is. And, there is an inconspicuous path that leads you to the start of the trail. But don’t worry, if you are there in the warmer months, there are sure to be other visitors there to point you in the right direction.

The hike down is a steep one, a rocky decline to the swimming hole that the waterfall feeds into. There are no handrails, and at times you might question your sanity (especially if you have younger kids in tow). Furthermore, if you have trouble with your knees or are not sure footed, you might have a hard time making the trek all the way down to the bottom. However, there is a spot at the halfway point where you can sit and enjoy the view of the waterfall too, and yes, it’s equally as mesmerizing.

Ozone Falls is a short but challenging hike

The youngest in our group, Sadie, is five. And, though she is an adventurer and has been on a lot of easy hikes, I would say for someone her age and stature, Ozone Falls would be her first moderate hike. If I’m being completely honest, it was a challenge for me too. Nora, on the other hand, was fearless. I guess that’s because I carried all of it (her fear) for her!

I was very grateful to have Justin with us on this adventure because I do not think I could make it to the bottom on my own with the girls. I tell you this so you can prepare if you are planning a visit yourself. All that aside, it is absolutely stunning once you reach the bottom.

Like I said, you can view Ozone Falls at the mid-way point on the trek down, and that gave us all the kick in the pants needed to make it the rest of the way. Once there, there are plenty of flat rocks to sit on, and leave your belongings. The swimming hole is shallow. For an average height adult, it seemed to go about waist deep. And, yes you can even “shower” under the waterfall if you are brave enough to give it a try.

Yes, we are planning to visit again so the girls can go swimming. But, when we return, we will definitely be traveling light. It is best to have both hands free on this short, steep hike so, bring only what you can carry on your back.

We spent about 90 minutes at Ozone Falls during our visit, and while sitting on the rocks behind the waterfall, I told Justin “we traded the ocean for rivers and waterfalls”. And to be honest, I am completely okay with that, at least for now.
