Ideas for a Sweet + Simple Valentine’s Day at Home
Valentine’s Day just so happens to be one of my favorite holidays. Yup, it’s right up there with Thanksgiving. Don’t get me wrong, I am not one of those lovey dovey types. No Pepe LaPew here.
And, I do think showing love to yourself and those you care about should be a daily act. But, there’s just something extra special about Valentine’s Day. Something that I haven’t been able to pinpoint yet. Maybe you can help me? Leave your thoughts in the comments section.
But for right now, let’s chat about ways to celebrate this very special holiday with those you love at home.
7 Ideas for Valentine's Day.
Start a new tradition. I’ve been looking for new ways to celebrate the holiday and came across this tradition. Basically, starting February 1, you write a compliment or sweet message on a heart shaped piece of paper and tape it to your kiddos door.
Prep Valentine’s Day Cards. Etsy is a goldmine for printable Valentine’s Day cards! They’re original, inexpensive and super adorable. Nora is obsessed with cats so she will be handing out these cards. Being that Sadie is still in Kindergarten, I wanted her Valentine’s to not have a candy theme. And, what kindergartener doesn’t like play-doh?! So, we went with these cards for her co-op class. Admittedly it was a bit difficult to cut out the circle for the playdoh but, it all worked out well in the end.
Host a Valentine’s Day Brunch. I hosted a brunch for my family last year, and it was great! Brunch is more casual and laid back so, it’s right up my alley. Not to mention, getting to enjoy a couple of glasses of rose prosecco in the early afternoon. Win-win!
Play holiday games. Get the kids together to play Valentine’s Day bingo, or pin the lips on Mrs. Valentine! Or, fill a heart shaped pinata with all of the best Valentine’s Day treats!
Plan your menu. Whether you’re out of the house most of the day or not, I think we can all agree a special day like Valentine’s Day takes some extra effort. This year I will be making this heart shaped french toast for breakfast.
And, it just so happens to be the day our homeschool co-op meets so, I will be packing a brown bag lunch for the girls. Traditionally, these two have been hooked on PB and Nutella sandwiches but, I think I finally got them to move on to ham and cheese. Believe me, it’s a big step!
I will be coupling that with some cupid chow and heart shaped fruit. Oh, and I can’t forget a lunch box note to let them know just how much I love them.
Now, for dinner we are going to take it back to our homemade heart shaped pizza but this year, THIS YEAR I am making the pizza dough. No more boboli pizza for this family. I feel like that’s a giant step for me in my cooking from scratch, and to be honest, it’s easier than you might think to make your own pizza dough from scratch. This is the recipe I will be using this year.
Give a (small) gift. I always felt loved when my mom placed a small stuffie on my bed for Valentine’s Day. And, confession…some of those stuffies, I held onto for way too long!
Traditionally, for my girls, I would set up a scavenger hunt. But, since we will be out of the house most of the day, I am going to place a small gift bag on their beds for them to come home to when we get back from co – op.
Have a family movie night. Spending Valentine’s Day at home is my cup of tea. And, this year we will be watching The Princess Bride. I am hoping to make some holiday inspired cookies for dessert too!
