Discovering Pirate’s Cove

Discovering Pirate's Cove

Welcome to a new series you can find right here on the blog titled Long Island Life.  This content is different than what I typically create in the health and wellness space. But, I would like to take the opportunity to share a little bit more about our life here on Long Island, a little behind the scenes because you will not find me on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.

Over the next few years I plan to take my daughters on day/overnight trips around Long Island to visit places undiscovered. Well, undiscovered to us. There are a lot of people that live on this island!

So, this week we decided to visit a small north shore beach just 5 miles from our home. Full disclosure, it is a spot I would have never noticed if I didn’t research fun things to do in our neighboring town. Indisputably, this is a well-known spot to locals but, for those of us that live outside of town, you might be unfamiliar with…Pirates Cove.

PIRATE'S COVE

Pirate’s Cove is a perfect hideaway for boaters during the warmer months, and a fun spot to relax in the sun if you are lucky enough to find parking (there are about 4 – 6 spots, depending on the size of the vehicles parked there). This county park is located in the village of Belle Terre, less than 2 miles North East of Port Jefferson. Grab your beach chairs, find a spot on the sand and watch as boats (and ferry) pass through the harbor. Oh, and keep in mind, this county park opens at 6 am, so don’t head over too early.

At the top of the dunes you will find amazing views of the Long Island Sound and Port Jefferson harbor too. In the cove itself, you will find quite a few moorings available but, that doesn’t mean you can just head in and tie up your boat. A mooring application is required to secure your spot on the water in Pirate’s Cove, it is by permit only.

After exploring Pirate’s Cove, head into Port Jefferson, the larger village less than two miles away. You will find tons of restaurants, bars and shops to keep you busy. I am a fan of PJ Lobster House, their lobster rolls are soo good! But, if seafood isn’t your thing, don’t despair! There are so many restaurants to choose from – American, Greek, Italian, Sushi, Mexican or head in for an ice cream and take a walk along the harbor front park.

As a daydreamer, I often create elaborate trips to other countries or epic cross country road trips in my head. But, then it dawned on me, I haven’t fully explored my home, Long Island. And, it’s time to change that. There are countless landmarks, waterfront villages, preserves, beaches, wineries, farms, and more that are waiting to be explored.

The girls and I are ready to discover and enjoy all that Long Island has to offer. Want to come along for the ride? Make sure to look out for my Long Island Life posts to follow our adventures!
