FREE Preschool Homeschool Curriculum, Week 13 – Birds
Week 13 is all about introducing our preschoolers to birds!
In summary, we will be covering our traditional subject areas – math, motor skills, language arts, etc. And, some of the activities you can look forward to are making your own bird feeders (with only 2 ingredients), and creating your very own bird sensory bin. With the weather warming up, our focus on gross motor skills is too. Check out some of the ways you can get your little on moving outdoors this week.

The letter of the week is L so, be sure to scroll ahead for more activities to build literacy. In math we will be working on the number 11, as well as using our tangrams to create various birds. Have I mentioned I love tangrams?! Well I do.

Here are some of the free resources I gathered from across the web to pull together our week 13 theme about birds:
Math Activities for Preschoolers
Tangram Bird Set (Adventure in a Box) – This site is a fantastic resource for all things homeschool. The activity sheets are well thought out, and engaging. Sadie enjoyed making the owl, flamingo, and duck from this FREE printable. Liska even has a section on Shadow Puppets that looks amazing, giftable even. They are paid for products but, ones you will be reaching for again and again, especially at bed time.
Cut + Paste Bird Graphing Activity (Education.com) – a two for one special! Practice fine motor skills and your preschoolers measurement skills with this worksheet.
How Many Birds Are There? Addition Worksheet (Education.com) – a great introduction to addition, covering up to number 5.
Number 11 Trace and Count Worksheet (123 Homeschool 4 Me) – this 11-20 packet is great to have on hand to reinforce those tricky teen numbers.
Spot the Pattern (Math Salamanders) – there are 8 worksheets to choose from for this topic. Maybe have your preschooler choose?
Fine/Gross Motor Skills
Now that the weather is starting to warm up around here, we are taking our gross motor activities outside with a:
Plastic Egg Spoon Race
Tricycle or Scooter Ride
Play Hopscotch, Jump Rope or Hula Hoop

Language Arts
Introduce the letter “L”- show your preschooler the capital and lowercase letter L, and introduce the sound of this letter. Next, have your little one try to create the letter L on a geoboard or with playdough. Watch the letter “L” on Starfall.
Letter L phonics + writing practice (Daycare Worksheets)
Letter L Phonics Review + Memory Game (Flashcard Fox) – These flashcards will not only build your preschoolers vocabulary but, develop critical thinking skills, problem solving skills, and visual recognition. I usually print out two sets of the letter of the week to create a matching game, it’s one of Sadie’s favorite activities.

SCIENCE/SENSORY
Discover birds in your area on this site.
Print out your own bird watching log and set up shop inside/ out. Designate snack time this week to bird watching.
Make your very own birds nest.
Work together to complete this bird anatomy worksheet.
Make your own bird sensory bin (Fireflies and Mudpies) – add your very own nests, and a small wooden birdhouse too (see art activities)! Most craft stores have birdhouses for just $1.
MUSIC
Pick ⅔ of the songs from here for your morning circle time.
Try your hand at the common North American birds songs.
ARTS + Crafts
Make a bird feeder .
Bird Nature Craft – Build your own bird’s nest.
Decorate Your Own Birdhouse – Michaels/the $1 store usually have small wooden bird houses you can scoop up for a relatively low price.
Paint with Feathers (Mess for Less)
CREATIVE PLAY
Grab your binoculars, nature journal, perhaps your backyard explorer kit suggested in week eleven’s lesson. Head out to a local wildlife refuge, bird sanctuary, or anywhere you can sit quietly for an extended period of time and go bird watching. Encourage your little one to draw pictures of the birds they see in their nature journal.
