If you’re like me, you spend a lot of time in your kitchen. And, that’s because on most days I am the home cook for the family, in charge of making breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. Let’s just say I’ve picked up a few tricks and hacks along the way.

So, while I was buzzing around the kitchen over the past week, I cataloged a few of my best cooking tips to share with you.

Cooking Tips From My Cottage Kitchen to Yours

  1. When cracking eggs into a bowl (for scrambled eggs/egg wash) place a plate under the bowl to keep the egg white off the counter.

  2. To piggyback off the first tip, here’s a trick for you. Have you ever cracked an egg only to discover little pieces of shell made it into your freshly cracked eggs? Well, instead of grabbing a fork or using your finger to remove the shell from your egg mixture, use the leftover, larger pieces of shell to take them out. It works every time.

  3. If you make your own pizza at home, like I do here what seems like every Friday, this one’s for you. Use a quality olive oil to grease your baking sheet then sprinkle some of your favorite spices on top before rolling out your pizza dough. Your favorite spices will be baked into your crust, and it tastes so delicious!

  4. Buy veggie stock. Yup, I don’t even buy beef or chicken stock anymore. Instead, I’ll always have a supply of veggie stock/broth in my cabinets. I use it to deglaze skillets, and to soften spicy flavors. When a recipe calls for stock/broth, it’s always veggie stock.

  5. Always check the spice aisle for sales. Once you have a good collection of the basics you can diy the more expensive ones at home.

  6. No dishwasher? Try to get into the habit of washing, drying, and putting your dishes away one at a time. Trust me you’ll feel alot better when your countertops are clear when you go to turn off that kitchen faucet. So long drying mat!

  7. A serrated knife is perfect for cutting homemade bread and tomatoes.

  8. Chopping garlic or onion, and hate the smell that gets left behind on your fingertips? Well, try rubbing lemon or lime (fresh or 1-2 drops of essential oil) on your fingertips. I’m not sure why/how this works but, it helps to remove the residue and scent from your fingertips.

There you have it! Some of my best tips, which one will you try in your kitchen?
