Free Pre-K Homeschool Curriculum, Week 14 – Flower Garden
Week 14 is all about introducing our preschoolers to the flower garden. A great transition from last week when we explored birds!
In summary, we will be covering our traditional subject areas – math, art, language arts, etc. Some of the activities you can look forward to are comparing numbers, working with watercolors, and a handful of fantastic read alouds. Furthermore, science/sensory promises a lot of hands on fun with two great experiments this week!
The letter of the week is C so, be sure to scroll ahead for more activities to build literacy. In math we will be working on the number 12, as well as comparing numbers, and addition to 10. There are loads more activities to explore, just continue reading below…
Welcome back for week 14!
Pre-K Homeschool Week 14 Free Resources
Here are some of the free resources I gathered from across the web to pull together our week 14 flower garden theme:
Math Activities for Preschoolers
Tangram flower, bee and butterfly (PreKinders) – using tangrams is a fabulous way for our preschoolers to get hands on experience with shapes, and gain spatial awareness.
Flower Measurement Activity (Fairy Poppins) – non standard measurement is frequently used in pre- k and kindergarten and is a great way to introduce our preschoolers to the general concept of measurement. It’s also an activity that Sadie enjoys because its more hands on. Not to mention, this activity also employs fine motor skills when using the snap cubes.
Spin and Compare Numbers (Superstar Worksheets) – Sadie and I were having bit of trouble spinning a pencil for this worksheet. But, there are cut and paste worksheets available too. I would definitely choose one of those next time.
Addition to Worksheet (Superstar Worksheets)
Number 12 Trace and Count Worksheet (1 2 3 Homeschool 4 Me) – a free downloadable packet that takes you through numbers 11-20! This week, we focus on the number 12.
Moreover, during the months ahead we will be focusing on recognition of numbers through 20. It’s also a great time to start counting with your preschooler to 100. You can count by 1’s and then start introducing skip counting by 2, 5 and 10. Don’t rush this activity, you have plenty of time with this one. Skip counting is a concept most children won’t work on until first grade.
Fine/Gross Motor Skills FOR WEEK 14
Choose two or three gross motor activities from The Ivy Academy. We chose the bed sheet parachute, indoor balance beam (we have one on hand), and the plank off challenge. It’s also a great time to head to the playground to help your preschooler practice on the monkey bars. And, practice hand eye coordination with a game of catch. We like to use those big bouncy balls that you can usually pick up at the store for a few dollars.
Language Arts
Introduce the letter “C” – show your preschooler the capital and lowercase letter C, and introduce the sound of this letter. Next, have your little one try to create the letter C on a geoboard. Watch the letter “C” on Starfall.
Trace letter C + phonics review (Daycare Worksheets)
Letter C phonics review and memory game (Flashcard Fox) – review the words for the letter of the week with your preschooler to build vocabulary. Print out two copies to create a simple and fun memory game!
Get collage crafty this week! Choose one of the ideas from Early Learning Ideas.
The sight words this week is BIG. My husband (an early elementary teacher) suggested the sight word focus at this stage should be on words with 2 or three letters only.
Read: The Tiny Seed, Eric Carle
Miss. Rumphius, Barbara Cooney
Plant the Tiny Seed, Christie Matheson
Planting a Rainbow, Lois Ehlert
*Remember to read one level A book with your preschooler each day. At this point, Sadie and I usually sit at the table together, I will read the sentence (while pointing to each word), and she mimics me afterward.
WEEK 14 - FLOWER GARDEN SCIENCE/SENSORY
Experiment with seeds – grab a fast growing seed at your local store and three seedling pots.
Plant 1: Sun Only
Pot 2: Water Only
Plant 3: Water and Sun
Monitor the progress of the seed growth throughout the week. You might be surprised at what you discover!
Daisy Dye Experiment (Natural Beach Living) – any white flower will do for this experiment. We didn’t have any daisies near by so we grabbed hydrangeas and it worked!
Parts of a Flower (Itsy Bitsy Fun) – we went with page 6 but, there is a ton of useful information in this packet!
Flower Soup – grab a tupperware/plastic bowl and head to the woods or your yard to pick some flowers for your flower soup. And just watch your preschoolers imagination run wild.
Build a flower garden – this stacking flower garden ($20) is an educational toy that your preschooler will use long after this week is over.
MUSIC
Revisit some of your favorite songs, poems or fingerplays this week!
CREATIVE PLAY/FIELD TRIP
Visit a local flower farm, or botanical garden this week. Or, set up your very own flower shop!
Art
Pick 2 or 3 of the art projects from Fantastic Fun and Learning. We chose spring flower collage art, watercolor flowers, and coffee filter art flowers.
