Free Homeschool Preschool Curriculum, Week 22 – Dr. Seuss

dr-seuss-week

From the depths of the ocean to outer space, we’ve explored quite a bit over the past couple of weeks. And, what better way to get grounded back on earth than by exploring our very own imaginations with Dr. Seuss?

Dr. Seuss encourages children to push the limit when it comes to using their imaginations but always has a moral lesson in his story lines to guide the reader through life. Maybe after hearing one of his stories your preschooler will want to create their very own deep sea creature. Or, if you worked together to create a planet last week, perhaps your preschooler will envision the type of life that grows there. The possibilities are endless.

Some of the activities you can look forward to are Dr. Seuss inspired science experiments, learning more about the letter of the week “K”, and wrapping up our study of numbers 1 through 20. Yes, we made it to number 20! Comprehension of the first twenty numbers will certainly help your preschooler transition into kindergarten.

There are loads more activities to explore, just continue reading below.

Math Activities for Preschoolers

Number 20 Recognition + Tracing (Kindergarten Mom)

Now that we’ve covered numbers up to twenty, let’s work on sequencing. This worksheet will allow your preschooler to become more familiar with the pattern within the  numbers 1-20.

Position Words Activity (The Measured Mom) – this activity is considered a fundamental in math for early education, and develops your preschoolers sense of spatial awareness.

For geometry this week, play a matching game with shapes. Be sure to review the name of each shape, and the number of sides each one has.

Take some time to play your favorite board game this week! Games like Candyland, Yahtzee, and Zingo are great options!

Fine/Gross Motor Skills

Here are some activities to develop your preschoolers fine and gross motor skills this week:
Puzzle Time (12 or more pieces)

Practice using buttons, zippers, snaps and buckles

Jump Rope

Practice opening ziploc bags, lunch bags, and containers at home

Play with Legos or Magna Tiles

Language Arts

Introduce the letter “K” – show your preschooler the capital and lowercase letter “K”, and introduce the sound of this letter. Next, have your little one try to create the letter “K” on a playdough mat or geoboard. Watch the letter “K” on Starfall.

Letter “K” phonics and writing practice (Daycare Worksheets)

Letter “K” phonics review (Flashcard Fox) – build your preschoolers vocabulary by sharing the “K” words on these flashcards. Make sure to print out two sets to create a memory game.

“K” is for key craft – print bubble letter template and have your preschooler stamp an old key within the bubble letter in their favorite paint colors.

The sight word this week is “it”. Kindergarten Mom has a great free printable to introduce this sight word to your preschooler.

**Remember to read 1 level B book with your child each day.

Read Aloud Books:
There are so many Dr. Seuss books to choose from, here’s a list for you to browse. When Nora was younger she really loved The Shape of Me and Other Stuff. When Sadie was born, it was something we read to her over and over again. I’m interested to see what Sadie’s favorite Dr. Seuss book will be! Does your kiddo have a favorite?

Books we chose (keeping in mind the crafts + science experiments)
One Fish, Two Fish
The Cat in the Hat
My Many Colored Days
Green Eggs + Ham
10 Apples on Top

Dr. Seuss Science + Sensory Activities

Read a story, then conduct a science experiment inspired by the story right after, then create a craft too! A great way to spend each afternoon this week.

A great list of Seuss inspired science experiments can be found right here.

Music

Make your very own musical instrument, and sing some of your favorite tunes you’ve learned so far this year!

Dr. Seuss Inspired Arts + Crafts

I highly encourage you to choose crafts that align with the books you chose to read this week. It’s just another way you can help your preschooler bring the stories to life!

Have your preschooler choose 1 or 2 of the craft activities straight from Seussville.

I also like the round up of crafts found over on on Spruce Crafts blog.

Then, there’s these Dr. Seuss shadow puppets from the Pinterested Parent which are perfect to incorporate into your story time.

Field Trip

Head to the Library this week and read as many Dr. Seuss books as you can! Did you know there is a Dr. Seuss Museum in Massachusetts? If you’re near Springfield you should definitely check it out. And, if you live in San Diego, then you already  know that Dr. Seuss was a longtime resident. It’s said he was inspired by his trips to the San Diego Zoo when he created many of the characters in his books! Here’s a guide on discovering Dr. Seuss in San Diego.
