FREE Homeschool Preschool Curriculum, Week 19 – The Zoo
This week we are heading to the Zoo!
In summary, we will be covering our traditional subject areas – math, motor skills, language arts, etc. Some of the activities you can look forward to are planning a visit to a your local zoo or wildlife sanctuary. There are loads of activities such as reading Secret Life of a Tiger, mixed media art projects, and building your very own zoo habitat!
Additionally, the letter of the week is “I” so, be sure to scroll ahead for more activities to build literacy. In math we will be working on the number 17, as well as practicing our addition skills, and introducing subtraction.
There are loads more activities to explore, just continue reading below.
Here are some of the free resources I gathered from across the web to pull together our week 19 zoo theme:
Math Activities for Preschoolers
This week start each day by completing a maze. I like the options over at Homeschool Math.
We are also carrying over the math games from week 18. Or, you can play some games online with Math Playground. I decided to make this activity Sadie’s choice.
The number of the week is 17, and to keep our practice mediums consistent, let’s head on over to Kindergarten Momfor our introductory worksheet. Afterwards, or later on during the week, pick one of these number recognition games to reinforce what your preschooler has learned.
Then head on over to Math Salamanders for an addition problem set, and subtraction too (we chose worksheet #1)!
Fine/Gross Motor Skills
Play with building blocks, legos or magna-tiles Go for a bike ride Have a race – hop, skip + run Play catch – start with a large bouncy ball, and see how small you can go Puzzle time (at least 12 pieces)
Language Arts
Introduce the letter “I” – show your preschooler the capital and lowercase letter “I”, and introduce the short sound of this letter. Next, have your little one try to create the letter “I” on a playdough mat/geoboard. Watch the letter “I” on Starfall.
The sight word of the week is coincidentally the word I!
Read Alouds: Secret Life of a Tiger, Wechterowicz My School’s a Zoo, Stu Smith Zoo Animals, Brian Wildsmith Zoo, Gail Gibbons The View at the Zoo, Kathleen Long Bostrom Zoo Day, Anne Rockwell
This is your reminder to read 1 Level B book each day.
SCIENCE/SENSORY
Pick your favorite zoo animal, and head to the library to do some more research. Then, complete this animal report together.
Build a zoo habitat (see number 4 in the second article) with these zoo animals.
