FREE Homeschool Preschool Curriculum, Family Theme, Week 2

Back again for week two! While the focus for week 1 was “All About Me”, this week we are going to focus on family. A traditional classroom would…

Wait, wait, wait…let’s not distract ourselves with what a traditional classroom would do…

During this lesson, we are going to remind our kids of how special our own families are, all while introducing the fact that all families are not the same.

Starting school during the summer can be a challenge, especially when literally everyone else is in a summer state of mind. Here in New York, school doesn’t start until the first or second week of September. But, starting early and starting slowly during the last weeks of summer does have its advantages.

Well, for starters it can give you and your kiddos an edge on the year ahead…

In the grand scheme of things I hope to finish this year early, all while creating more wiggle room for what life serves up along the way…

Pre-K Homeschool Week 2 Free Resources

Here are some of the free resources I gathered from across the web to pull together our week 2 family theme:

Math Activities for Preschoolers

Count the People (Family Theme Workbook, Fun with Mama)

How many members in these families? (Family Theme Workbook, Fun with Mama)

What Comes Next? (Family Theme Workbook, Fun with Mama)

This Fun With Mama workbook is a great find. It has loads of activities for this week’s family theme. However, you should know that we just used the math worksheets (listed above) from this workbook.

Moreover, during the first few months of pre-k we will be focusing on number 0-10. So, while we completed the activities above, we also supplemented with some additional activities too! Let me know in the comments if you’d like me to share the resources we purchased for Sadie’s pre-k 4 year.

Fine/Gross Motor Skills

Bean bag toss with family rhyme

Draw a circle and decorate it – this week we decided to learn how to draw a butterfly. This is an activity that was geared more toward big sister, Nora but Sadie wanted to give it a try too. And, as there are circles incorporated in throughout the butterfly drawing, it’s a great alternative to simply drawing a circle.

Cut + paste activity (Kids Can Have Fun) – There are a ton of cut and paste activities here for your kiddos to try throughout the year, even this one for our family theme this week.

Language Arts

Introduce the letter “M”- We are using 4 Weeks to Read to help Sadie this year, a resource we had on hand to teach Nora how to read. While Nora loved the activities, we needed to take a different approach with her, and put this program aside. And, that’s okay because everyone learns differently. For Sadie, we will focus on one letter a week.

Letter M craft “m” is for Moose (The Simple Parent) – Between the hand cut outs for antlers, and googley eyes, I love this craft for our letter of the week.

Trace letter M + phonics review – for handwriting, we have been using Handwriting without Tears. So far, I only have good things to say. This workbook has helped both Nora + Sadie’s handwriting tremendously. However, there are so many free resources available too, like this one or this one.

Read: The Family Book, Todd Parr
Who’s in a Family, Robert Skutch

Science/Sensory

Music

Sing-a-long for the week – Finger family
I must warn you, this song is almost as bad as Baby Shark. Nora used to sing this all.the.time. So now, I pass that joy on to you and your family lol. This song will help your little one to identify and learn the names of five fingers.

Creative Play

Dollhouse/ Lego house for the boys! Creating a peg doll family is a great arts + crafts activity as well.
