A Very Simple Floor Plan – Part 2

Farm House Floor Plan | Danielle Ravitch

Hey there! Today I am going to share some design inspiration for the second half of this single story farmhouse of ours. I shared the floor plan (layout) in this post, a before tour (kind of) right here, as well as our very first home project

Bedroom Two Becomes Bedroom One

Now, here is where things get a little tricky. While bedroom two (bka Nora’s bedroom) is the best in the house, it’s not exactly perfect. For starters, there are absolutely no doors but two points of entry. So, the footprint of Nora’s room will not change. But the walls most definitely will.

For a single room, her room is well appointed. The room is 130 square feet or 13 x 10. And, I’ve mentioned before that bedroom two has double windows that look out onto the side yard. Letting in a ton of light.

Not too shabby if you ask me.

When we renovate, we are going to close off one of the entryways but, I am not exactly certain which.  I’d also like to honor this timeless farmhouse, and design her space in a more grown up way. But, make the space more playful with some bohemian elements, like this picture here…

What are your thoughts on decorating a child’s bedroom? Do you consider it their space and let them run wild? Or, take the opportunity to subtly guide them, make the design more classic but let them zhuzh it up with personal touches? I’m leaning towards the latter.

Disclaimer: I am currently trying to see how I can combine my love of boho and cozy country. Stick with me, it will be a journey, for sure.

Kitchen Turned...Bedroom?

Okay, so I previously mentioned that the kitchen is the second largest space in the house. I also shared where I would like to relocate the current kitchen, in this post.

So, what to do with the kitchen as it sits today?

Well, I’d like to turn a portion of it into the master bedroom.

And, the other portion into a pantry/laundry area/desk space? Yes, as a former contractor once told me (when remodeling our co-op kitchen), it’s most definitely like jamming 10 lbs of sh*t into a 5 lb bag, lol.

But, let’s not get distracted and start with the master bedroom.

I’d love to have it toward the back of the house. And, if we are throwing everything on the table, I’d also like an en suite and private patio as well. Cue in the bridge of Aerosmith’s Dream On, am I right?

Oh, but trust me…

I would not throw these ideas out there if I didn’t believe that they were at all possible. So yes, it most certainly can be done in this small space. Just not on a grand scale.

To be honest, in this season of life I don’t really need much in my bedroom other than a place to sleep (and nap). Then, there’s the business of keeping my clothes organized. But, you get the idea…

While I most certainly require my bedroom to be a safe haven, and a respite from the doldrums of the day to day routine, I don’t really require that much space.

Secondly, I don’t find an oversaturated space very cozy. I’d like to pay more attention to the detail of the traditional elements – doors, windows, knobs, flooring, etc.

Honestly, it’s been hard trying to find an inspiration picture that really grabs me (on its own). I’d like to think the end result of my hodgepodge of ideas would be something completely, well…me, I mean us!

Bedroom Three

If I’m being completely honest, I do not like this bedroom (gasp!!). I know, I wasn’t exactly keeping it a secret.

I just feel like the space needs to be wider. More of a box, less of a rectangle, ya get me?

It’s just easier to work with a square!

So, herein lies the next dilemma…how do we make this rectangle a square? Reach into the current laundry room?

Floor Plan Fumble

I told you, the back of the house is causing some trouble….

It’s mostly because this farmhouse is set up kind of like a shotgun. It’s more of a rectangle! But. bedroom three is 13 x 8, not so bad. Just awkward (rectangle) proportions.

Truthfully, I know that my ideas for this space are likely to change over time. But, it’s fun to get a preliminary idea of where we might be going…
